Design: Whole eyes from three individuals were collected and stored in RNAlater. Individuals were pooled to generate total RNA. RNA was checked for quality on an Agilent Bioanalyzer and RNAseq libraries were made using the TruSeq RNA Sample Preparation Kit v.2 (Illumina, San Diego). Libraries were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq1500 at the University of Maryland Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research core facility.

Cichlid fishes are known for their differential expression of opsin genes. Opsin gene expression differs between adults of different species. In addition, some species vary opsin expression through development, while other species are neotenic, retaining larval like gene expression. We sequenced retinal transcriptomes for developmental series from several different African cichlid species.
